nerdus intellectus
No, but it IS a slippery slope. It could be from a foundation of severe insecurities which are masked by trying to be more "intelligent" than everyone else simply because they don't know how to feel adequate in any other way...

OR much like food addictions, sex addictions, drug addictions, alcohol addictions, the accomplishment of learning something new can provide the avid learner with a "high" that they want to ride, non-stop. Much like people who meditate 3-4 hours a day and feel that they are better than others who don't, it can be a deep-seeded issue involving the escape from having to have to be inside of one's skin and see who they really are...

OR it can be healthy. More often than not, I believe it's not.
A Dork. While learning is good, a chap has to ocassionally take a break from that and get shagged.
A Human Being. Its in our nature to want to learn and to think. That's what makes us human after all, our ability to think and evolve our minds by learning. An animal doesn't stop to think why am i here or what am i doing with my life, but a person does. Were are not animals that just follow our basic instincts, we are a species of thinkers with the innate desire to learn built in. Everyone wants to learn deep down, they may deny it, they may refuse to believe it, or they may put other down for it. That's because they just don't understand things or they are afraid.
The desire to ponder and learn is a good thing. These posts on your question about peole being "Nerds"... those are idiots trying to be funny or just ignorant. they want to learn too, though it may not be the desire to learn from a text book but they do want to learn about something in life, everyone does. It's impossible not to learn something new everyday, simply put you learn about that day and what you experienced.
So go on, think, think til you can think no more, and learn your heart out!

oh and the term is...
- Intellectual -
An intellectual is one who tries to use his or her intellect to work, study, reflect, speculate on, or ask and answer questions with regard to a variety of different ideas.
