How can I stop being miserable while pursuing my dream?
My problem is that I don't like my job, and also the fact that I don't have the courage to start writing. I can't just quit my job because it's the family business and I owe it to my parents to stay there until at least I can provide them with some money so that I can pursue my dreams guilt-free.
Can you give me any tips on how to stay motivated, or how to view this with a more positive eye?
I won't stop at anything until I fulfill my dreams, but I feel that I'm paving the road towards it with unhappiness and sorrow, and that's an unnecessary obstacle.
Answer:
"Writers write." (heard at a writers' conference)
Here are some ideas for you:
*Start or join a writers group.
*Make a commitment to write a page (or even a half a page) a day.
*Read a book called "If You Can Talk You Can Write" by Joel Saltzman--He's got GREAT ideas and inspiration!
*Start a blog
*Join a Toastmasters group because you will have to "stretch" out of your comfort zone. You'll also meet interesting people and it will force you to "write" some ten minute speeches.
*Listen to motivational speakers who support you in living your dreams. (Zig Ziglar said some things that helped me get my book from my heart to the paper.)
One quote I really like is "there are no good writers, only good re-writers."
Start now!
Good luck!
I think that you should keep a journal and try to write every night. If you want to be a writer you must write. You just expressed yourself here and that's writing.
Consider getting a small job that does something rather unique and has a lot of contact with interesting people.. perhaps reading or talking with the elderly.
Second. Do not write to write. Start a gibberish diary. Every morning before you shower, eat, get coffee . sit down and just write what ever comes into your mind, even if its self defeatist in the beginning.
Gymnasts don't wait for the uneven bars to chase them down and beg to be played on. They get up every day and work out. You need to work out that part of your creative brain on repetitive and menial exercises.
Find inspiration in the common and weave about it the words of greatness.
I agree with Allie. Also remember that a little melancholy never seemed to hurt a genius did it?
There are many people like you do a job they really dont like for many compelling reasons like monetary benefit or because thats the job they get due to their educational background but have passion for another profession. The best thing to do is to allocate a time daily or every week as a personal time wherein you start writing as a hobby. Do this with full sincerity to your passion.Slowly when you feel a bit confidently about your writing, circulate them to some good friends or acquaintances who are capable of giving you a good feedback. Then boldly submit it to a journal or paper. Keep doing this as a side activity till that day when you feel confident enough to permanently switch over to writing. Or you can atleast become a part time writer. This would ensure a safe transition.
Well writing is like any other job. I take a book with me everywhere and just write on my breaks and after work. Just tell yourself that where your working right now is temporary. Don't push yourself to write let it flow naturally.
start with writing few sentences and don't be too hard on yourself. you haven't started yet and you feel frustrated already. put your heart into it and accept that some people might like it and some might not. enjoy your passion for writing and go for it. keep that job and summon that courage to start writing. you can do it. believe in yourself.
