I Need Help Getting Out Of Speaking In Front Of My Class During Presentations?
Please read this whole thing, loves.
I am 16 and I have Hypoglasemia. I shake alot regardless of the situation, but when i have to stand up & speak in front of my class I shake so hard a teacher asked if she could hold my hards. Litterally, I tremble & it looks like im having seizures or something. Then to make it worse, my voice waivers and i can barely speak. I turn red from embarassment and nearly cry. I feel as if im going to pass out.
One time i had a panic attack and i ran out of the classroom and straight to my school counselor's office.
Do you think that both a note from my doctor explaining that have Hypoglasemia [so i shake alot] and a note from a therapist explaining that i have social anxiety would be enough to get me out of speaking in front of my class?
I feel like dropping out of high school because of this. It's really horrible, but i doubt anyone here will understand completely.
Thanks! <3

Hi! I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling so bad. I totally understand your fears. It’s a horrible, horrible situation... but (and I know this is the last thing you want to hear) you need to tackle your problems now. I had to go through school and 8 years of university feeling like you – and I wish I had tackled it at the beginning. Bite the bullet! Every time you speak in public, it will get easier and easier.
The following steps will eliminate or significantly reduce your panic attacks and anxiety:
1.Breathe properly - if you control your breathing, you control panic. As soon as you notice the signs of anxiety, check your breathing: breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer (to the count of 7 or so) through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). This will soon restore the balance of oxygen and you will feel a lot better.
2. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy! CBT is proven to be the most effective thing for panic attacks and social anxiety. It takes a bit of work, but it is super effective. (After 15 years of panic attacks, mine stopped completely). You can take a course for free online at: http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/elear... It has been funded by NHS Scotland and has had great results thus far.
3. Try relaxation exercise tapes (progressive muscular relaxation). They really help if you practise often enough. This site has instructions on how to do it without the tapes (and other useful info): http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resource...
Please try CBT regardless of whether or not you decide to do the presentation and stick at it. It’s free and could make a huge difference to your life. Hope you feel better soon. Best of luck!
YOU CAN OVERCOME! YOU CAN OVERCOME! Have Faith in the Lord and Faith in yourself. If you start shaking and people notice, SO WHAT? If you start to turn red SO WHAT? it doesn't matter, do what you have to do and do it as best as you can. Tell yourself that you CAN do his and with everytime that you go against your fear..you are overcoming it!
DO NOT drop out because of an "anxiety" that really can be overcome. If you had confidence in your ability to communicate, you would not feel so anxious. I had the same thing. I had to sit in front of a camera at Dale Carnegie (way back when) and have my whole class critique me. It was excruciatingly painful. It never did get any better. What I would suggest, is LOTS of notes or dropping a class that makes you feel that way. Doctors notes rarely work unfortunately because everyone feels the way you do. I know. When I said it was worse than other people, they laughed at me. So I totally get that it is worse for you. But you know what? Now that I am much older, it does not bother me one bit. Once you stop caring so much about what other's perceive you as, you get a clue and confidence in yourself begins to grow. It's a maturity thing. Everyone has to go through what you are though. You're not alone.
Brown,
I cried through my first 3 speeches. The tears literally ran down my cheeks.
Those shakes are from nerves, however, just in case ... eat a little cheese or have a container of milk shortly before class.
It will just get worse if you do not tough it out now!
Believe it or not. It is easier for me to speak in front of 500 people than to meet one new individual. I wish I had been given lessons is social situations with just one or two people.
Try taking a class in dramatics, when it is someone else's words it is somehow easier to be "on stage".
I have been there and survived... I totally understand... I did it and so can you.
best of luck... ala theatre. Break a leg. go for it guy!!
