If he is a man ask about his relationship with his mother. That will clearly tell you how he will treat a significant other.

What is one of your long and short term goals?

Personally, I ask what books the person has read, especially recently. I have always thought you can know a person by the books they read.

You can learn alot just by listening or watching their behavior.
Id probably ask,,Whats important to you in this world?
you can ask about their mother..if its a guy..guys usually want their girls to look like thier mothers...
also ask what he likes to do when he has free time? what he wants to do in the future? what he thinks about life? that kind of thing...=)
You should know what their priorities are. You can tell alot about a person by their priorities. That would be one of the first things I wanted to find out about a person. Also, ask them what their goals in life are. Are they ambitious?? Or, not?

What do you do for fun when you go out/stay home?
Do you go to church? Where? How often?
Do you love your Mom?
Asking very often puts people off, unless it's about something they're already talking about.
Read between the lines.
Ask those questions only when they're open already.
People like to talk about themselves, so once you find something they enjoy talking about, just keep asking questions about that particular topic. Ask about their family or their hobbies to start out with. In some cultures it's rude to ask about work because it implies that you want to know how much money the person makes, but you'll probably know right away if this is the case or not depending on the person.
