Why do people say that helping someone else will help you take your mind off your own problems?

like volunteering. It doesn't help me. It just makes me think that I should be at home or where ever trying to figure out how to solve my problem.

Answer:
Because it puts your focus on someone else's problems or needs.

Regardless of what you are doing, your problem is still going to be nagging at you. But sometimes, by helping someone else with their problem, in a round about way it can give you insight into your own problems. Not always just sometimes.

Additionally, by focusing on someone else's problem it may show you that people have REAL problems compared to what you may be going through at the time.
I LOVE HELPING PEOPLE I HAVE DONE IT ALL OF LIFE IT MAKES ME FEEL GOOD........
Probably because it puts your own problems in perspective. I have no idea what your problems are, so I'm not making any assumptions, but just for an example, say there was someone who felt bad because they didn't have a significant other... so they went to volunteer at a shelter and saw people that didn't even have homes. It might make her think that her problem is not so bad.
Helping other people with their problems is great. (if you dont have any problems) It's not something you should do. You will start to fixate on other people's problems to avoid your own..
