How can I know if my memories are true or false?
Answer:
I don't believe that you can.
However, as you mature, you develop a sense of how you should act in any situation. If a memory falls outside the boundaries of your perception of acceptable actions or reactions, that is probably a false memory.
The easiest way to see if your memories are true or false is simply to see how fuzzy it is and how far ago you remembered the thing. For example, I might think I left my key (an hour ago) on the desk in the bathroom, but I'm not so sure. That way it is LIKELY that it is a false memory. There really is no guaranteed way. If the memory dates back to several years, there is no way unless you want to talk with someone else who knows it.
When ever I have heard of people having so called memories that were later proven false there was always a psychiatrist "helping" the person remember them. Some disreputable professionals get carried away and actually end up coaching the patient into having false memories that fit his or her theory - rather than getting at the truth which may be more boring and not as sensational and lucrative for them. Whether it's done on purpose or because they are idiots I don't know. But I would be very wary if anyone is suggesting to you what you might be remembering.
