hi there... acknowledging that weakness and actually wanting to turn that around is a good start. First off, i recommend the book of Matthew Andrews " Making Friends"... its a really nice and simple book. Having a lasting friendship, is not just yours to create, its also dependent on the other party's willingness to build a lasting friednship with you. friendship is not something you force into...its rather something that grows as you get to know a person and nurture that bond with them. be yourself, do the things you love to do, share it with others with all honesty and sincerity... :-)
Develop your self-confidence and feelings of self-worth. When you talk to people be confident and remind yourself you are a very interesting person worth talking to. Go to as many events as you can- drop in even if you are not particularly interested. Set goals e.g. I am going to chat with one new person each day.
