Why is it people stay quiet in an elevator & always look at the floor level? why cant they be themselves?

i mean see plenty of hot women in an elevator and i too stay quiet however it would be different outside an elevator...

Answer:
Because we are confined, and have no where to back to if we feel threatened by any situation, so we don't start conversations, on the off chance something goes wrong.
Because it is a public but cramped space. People feel all closed in and that doesn't make for a good scenario for people being themselves.
haha that's funny that you said that. it's just weird i guess and since most people are going into work or leaving they don't really have time to talk... who knows! that's no reason that you couldn't talk to them though... be the one to break the silence!
is this the most important thing in yopur life? man, you ahve some issues to deal with!! ha! ha! elevators? what a joke!!
From a personal standpoint, an elevator are the two things I absolutely cannot stand:

Tight space and people crammed together in it.

It's even worse when you get someone who has the "I haven't showered in a month" smell.

9 times out of 10, I opt for the stairs.
We all have a 'comfort zone' - the space we need to maintain between other people we don't know in order to feel comfortable with them. In an elevator, this zone is violated and people seem to mutually agree to simply ignore each other in order to ease the anxiety of that violation.
It is uncomfortable to be in close quarters with strangers. They are invading your space. If you talk to a woman, others will hear you. Why not get off the elevator with her and start a conversation?
Normally they are in a hurry and have to train themselves to not drift in thought. Most of the time it is strange to strike up converstation in an elivator, because when you get to a subject of interest, it's time for them to get off and you say awkward goodbyes. It's only 10 secondsof awkward silence and then you're free.
I think personal space is infringed upon. There are no outside elements or distractions and perhaps people are too self-conscience to speak, or too afraid of rejection if they do speak and and are ignored, with no safe place to move to.
I think it's because they feel like they can't escape from the situation if they begin to feel uncomfortable. I'm sure if you just strike up a conversation, like are you going to .? then they may open up...I know, I would...but basically it's just because people feel it's a socially awkward situation being in an enclosed space with a total stranger.
Being close together you are in people's "personal space" which makes people uncomfortable to begin with. It also could be that if your conversation / pick up line doesn't go well, you are stuck with them until one of you gets out which could be very awkward.
because there is always an opportunity for someone to excuse themselves in an outside conversation. In an elevator the person is essentially trapped into dealing with whatever foolishness someone might come up with. it is not a fair situation :-)
It's a psychological thing. we are uncomfortable in a tight space. We don't have much personal space and that makes most people uncomfortable. It probably not a good idea to hit on women in an elevator, they would be uncomfortable and feel trapped. Most ppl get in an elevator and stay quiet, wait for it to be over as soon as possible. everyone faces the door too if you noticed..
Just the idea of being closed into a tight space with total strangers can be uncomfortable for some. Sort of walk in and brighten the mood if you can. Ask where they're headed, press the button for them and make little comments til they get off. Who knows, you may just be headed to the same place!
