In general what is the basis of a mother-daughter relationship? (what struggle exists?)?
Answer:
I think children of both sexes seek approval, affection and positive reinforcement, or praise, from both parents of either sex. Family structures are so different today, and many aren't just the typical nuclear family structure (two parents with kids, etc), so kids look to all caregivers for these things.
But, if you are thinking more along the lines of classic (if very dated) psychology, like the Electra complex - I think this might have been Freud - it was supposed to be similar to the Oedipal complex. Daughter sees Mom as competition for Father's attention?
Probably the same things, until you get old enough to know your Mom wasn't perfect either and all those things she told you wasn't always correct.
I found out my Mom was not very religious at all she didn't get where I was and her funeral proved that to me.
I still think I wasn't her child and I was adopted.. that's harsh but the truth.
PK's response is absolutely correct.
Generally, mothers need to provide a positive example for their daughters. This includes positive longterm friendships with other women, respect for Fathers, and the most beneficial, how to be self sufficient.
