Are you only happy when you buy something? for example, shopping for new clothes, buying a new car..?

spending money on materials to feel happiness?

Answer:
Shopping annoys me, and I put it off as long as I can.

I keep possessions to a minimum, because they are more of a burden than anything else.
nope i always want more!
I think you have different feelings about this as you get older. Retail therapy used to make me happy but there is a point in life where you find that you need to get rid of all the clutter and buying new stuff isn't as important as it once was.
Very many people are compulsive spenders, compulsive shoppers...it is an addiction. Some addictions are life affirming, such as being addicted to going running every morning, or being addicted to showering your wife with love and affection, but some addictions are quite negative: such as buying things you will never use and probably won't even open, just to have them.
However, there are many attitudes about money.as many as there are attitudes for politics and religion.
I believe money should be used to advance one's lifestyle, to improve one's way of living, and to enhance one's life. I am what you what call a progressive. Money should be used to make progress. It involves spending and investing money, but in things that will improve one's life. For example, buying new equipment for your small business. Buying nice clothes so you can look your best.
The opposite end of the spectrum is the miser: a person who hoards money, for it's own sake, but doesn't seem to put it to any good use. They may have lots of money in the bank, but they wear old clothes, eat crummy food and all that. When they die they leave a big stash of cash to probate or something. That is no way to live.
At yet another end of the spectrum is the spendthrift, the wastrel, who will go to a bar or a casino and drop all kinds of cash, with nothing to show for it the next day except a hangover.
My attitudes about money have a lot to do with my religious background. I am an Evangelical Christian.
I use to believe that I was happier after I bought something (when I was down), but the older I become, the somewhat wiser I have become. That new thing (for me) gives me happiness for only a short period. Fake happiness. Now chocolate... gives me all day happiness lol (just kidding)
No. For me, it is the complete opposite. I feel like I wasted so much money on things that I never really needed.
Example: I am sure I spent well over 500 dollars on this teddy bear collection just because I thought it was cute. Now those same teddy bears are sitting in some box in my basement because I don't have the room to display them and they don't interest me anymore.
I could go on and on and on. But, I'm sure I wasted well over 30,000 dollars on things just in the last 8 years that I did NOT need.
So, now I am trying to donate these items to charity to get them out of my house and life...and hopefully make someone else happy. I still catch myself at the store thinking "Awww..that is so cute..I want it!" and occasionally I give in and bring it home. Then after awhile I think "Why? Why did I buy that? I don't need it!" I start to feel guilty that I wasted money that I could definitely use on better things.
If I had my way, then I would ditch the majority of my belongings and only have the necessities and a few luxuries. But, my hubby is a stubborn man and refuses to let go of certain items. So, we basically live in a house full of junk. Because that is what stuff you don't need is...JUNK.
My dear friend, the value system of the world has changed drastically.According to this value system..
I AM = WHAT I HAVE. [ material possesion...]
If i 'have' more i.e. big money, huge villa, branded clothes, cars etc...then i am valued as MORE in society.
And this leads to competition because now the OTHER is seen as a threat by me.If I want to be MORE then i got to HAVE more than the other...so...go on shopping and HAVE MORE AND FEEL MORE.

If you ask me the question...i would answer...My happiness does not depend upon the things i buy. I refuse to give power to control my happiness to these inanimate objects.Happiness is a INSIDE JOB.
Infact sometimes when i walk down the super market...i smile looking at the tempting things there and say to them...I AM HAPPY WITHOUT YOU...ha ha ha.
No. A lot of things cause greater happiness, and longer lasting happiness than consumerism. Family, community, friendship, love. It's scientifically proven. Read any social psych textbook.

Also, have you read the survey of the happiest countries in the world? Topping them off are some of the poorest nations, where community, rather than material possessions, are prized. Largely materialistic cultures like that in the US fared low. Still, many people THINK they can buy happiness.
No way----not at all. I am happiest out in nature like at the beach or just away from the city. I think that is how people were meant to live----not crowded together.
I'm happy ALL the time!
