How have psychologists approached the question of personality differences?

Answer:
One...every human personality is unique. The describing of personality "types" is an oversimplification mostly for the entertainment of the public. While some personalities are quite similar, there are always differences.

Two...personality consists of thought and behavior patterns, which are ingrained over a period of a lifetime.

Three...personality patterns influence behavior. While knowledge of personality traits does not necessarily predict behavior, most of the time people do what feels comfortable and natural, which is to just go with their habitual behavior patterns. But at any time, they can chose to stretch and act "out of character."

Three...personality patterns are influenced by both nature and nurture...structures people are born with, and patterns learned throughout life.

These are the major themes of how psychologists approach the question of personality differences.
That's a psychiatric question.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality test designed to assist a person in identifying some significant personal preferences. Katharine Cook Briggs and her daughter Isabel Briggs Myers developed the Indicator during World War II, and its criteria follow from Carl Jung's theories in his work Psychological Types.[1]

The Indicator is frequently used in the areas of pedagogy, group dynamics, employee training, leadership training, marriage counseling, and personal development.

Academic psychologists have criticized the indicator in research literature, claiming that it "lacks convincing validity data" [2][3][4] and that it is an example of the Forer effect.[5]

The registered trademark rights in the phrase and its abbreviation have been assigned from the publisher of the test, Consulting Psychologists Press Inc., to the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Trust.[6]

Personally, I've taken the MBPTI test, and found the results to be amazingly accurate and informative. The results were able to help me identify my areas where I excel, and where I need to be extra attentive. I know of many people who've benefettied from taking the test, and were able to use the results to thier advantage. (especially when it comes to choosing a career). It's simply another way to help you get to know yourself better. There are lots of books about it too.
