What exactly does it mean to have self esteem?

What is self esteem and how could a person go about getting some of it?

This person silently hates themself, is insecure in relationships and does not believe that people want to be with them. They are a bit of a walkover rarely sticking up for themselves and has trouble expressing themselves

What steps can this person start to take to become confident, assertive and full of self respect and self love?

Answer:
self esteem is taking pride in oneself. if a person has low self esteem that means that theyve had bad experiences, no one is born with a low self esteem, it is given by others.
in order to begin loving themselves ppl with low self esteem should first heal on the inside, they should erase all of the things that theyve heard and start all over. talking to others helps in learning how to express emotions but when doing this the person should start out slow meaning that they shouldnt cross their comfort level.
to feel better the person should do things for him/herself that will make him/her feel good: buy new clothes, have a day of relaxation, pamper yourself.
a person lets other walk all over him/her because he/she is afraid of what others will think and he is also afraid of looking weak but by letting things happen he allows others to continue bothering him and he will have no respect. by sticking to what you believe firmly and not following others you gain respect and others will leave you alone and you will feel good about yourself.
to have confidence or to belive in your self
It means to feel good about yourself.
to be self-assured of your own self-worth.
First Step:
Have you talk with them, you seem very thoughtful and smart
You could really help this person.
It means to be sure about yourself, without needing assuring from others.
But does not mean to be corky!!
i have low self asteem so its harder to answe this sorry.

i guess it worries me that self esteem can leed to arrogance
It means you are frightened of nobody, no company and nothing on earth, heaven or sky and if you can walk into a zoo without charge, you can balance with all animals. Obviously I would not wish you to do so as I would have a conscience if you got bitten by a snake or mauled. It means you can hold your head up, no matter what.
I think you can gain self esteem by celebrating your smaller accomplishments. If you are having problems in relationships. review the things about relationships you do well at. Give yourself reason to believe you have what it takes to get things done. Give more attention to these things then to the short comings.
Wow! I use to be like this! You should go to Barnes and nobles and read the "everything self esteem" book.
Its totally normal to have a point in your life where you feel like this... I am a bit of a push over as well...So the few times that I stick up for myself I feel GREAT! you have to start with baby steps, try getting yourself involved in a group where you can socialize with people, get to know yourself. Self esteem is about having the confidence to not care what other people think!
i believe like Cogito said, we all have to be assured of our self worth. If you're down and flattened, start with small little things that you cherish?
Not saying that you have to celebrate with a party just because you mailed a letter successfully, but things like doing well academically or in something that you're passionate about?

Pouring your heart and soul into something and see it taking shape can be sometime assuring that efforts do translate into reality sometimes. I believe it is a huge esteem boost to anyone unless you're one of those inflated bigheads where success serves to add to your record only
Marketing Companys see self esteem with images of success, money, nice cars, big houses, 2.4 and a bit on the side.

I would have to disagree on the issue of self esteem as we are a product of our surroundings, peer pressure so no one individual can ever have self esteem as its always based on someone elses judgement and not you own.

People who are percieved as having lack of self esteem ofthen are rebelling against others judgements and as such are outcasts of society.

When all the cattel in the world realize that they have been had, what are they going to do? Complain? and to who?
There is a lot of confusion about this topic thnk for bringing it up

Self worth is what you believe you deserve, self esteem is what you really think of yourself

If you struggle with self esteem this is simple

Find what you value, what you look up to, do it, do what you look up to for no reward other than it being done, don't do it for recognition, do it to erve god and his creation and in doing what you look up to: That which is esteemable you will begin to build self esteem
What's relly the best is that they start to see psychiatrist, I don"t say this because I think they're crazy, but because the psychiatrists are professionals and they can really help with this kind of issues.
They should work, developing a talent or a network of relationships based on honesty.
having self esteem is believing in yourself and having confidence. You may have all the knowledge in the world but without confidence all will be of no use because you do not believe in what you do and that will put you behind. Having self esteem raises all your hopes and aspirations.
I dont know. I wish i had some. I think I'm a horrible person to.
I know where you are coming from. Having been on low self-esteem all my life, I found hypnotherapy worked for me. I did not see a hypnotherapist I used CDs (Glenn Harold CDs from Amazon are a good place to start) but if you do not believe that hypnotherapy works for you find something that does. But for around £10, it is always worth a go.
having self-esteem is about loving and respecting yourself.believing that you have a purpose on this world, believing that you can be a part of somebody's life and that you can have a positive impact in society.
having self-esteem is about respecting yourself and knowing that you can achieve your goals in life...also expecting society to have respect for you.
