What class do you have to take to be a physical therapist and how many years does it take ???
Answer:
In the US, it requires completion of either a master's or doctorate level degree from an accredited physical therapy program.
Most programs are competitive entry...meaning students who meet minimum requirements and complete the predetermined set of prerequisite courses are elligible to apply, but meeting those requirements does not guarantee admission. Historically, competitive entry programs admit about 20% of qualified applicants; however, enrollment in programs has dropped since I've been a student so this may be higher now.
The prerequisite courses usually include a year of chem and physics, 2-3 semesters of biology, anatomy and physiology, 2-3 semesters of psychology, statistics, trig/calculus as well as your general education requriements. Some programs require completion of your bachelor's degree prior to admission...especially doctorate level programs. Keep in mind that what type of bachelor's degree you have doesn't matter...as long as you've completed the requirements.
Once in the program, your coursework includes gross humany anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, research, and of course, field specific courses such as orthopedics, neurology, rehabilitation, etc.
The professional phase of the program usually takes about 3 years. Depending on whether or not you have to compelte your bachelor's PRIOR to the program, most PT programs are designed to completed in 6-7 years. After completion of the program, you will sit for a licensure exam.
I suggest you go to the APTA website at: http://www.apta.org to the education section to learn more about PT programs and to get a list of accredited programs.
