Why it is that being popular at school is so important when?

...many celebrities and succesful professionals like Hayden Christiansen, Daniel Radcliffe and Bill Gates weren't popular?

I personally think that popularity is overrated because things that make you popular in highschool will not help you in the real world. Were I study, for example, almost all the popular kids have bad grades and are uninterested in activities other than partying and drinking. Most of them don't have a great sense of humor, are not smart enough to talk about about books but not superficial enough to talk about celebrities, make-up and clothes, don't have visible talents..., in fact, are too dull to be called cool. I don't hate them, I sometimes talk to them, it's just I can't find what's so special about them. I'm in no way judging popular people in general and are aware that the things that make you popular at school depend on the culture you're living in; however, this is the case were I study. You just learned a great truth: following the crowd can lead nowhere. Just because alot of people think something or someone is great doesn't mean it's true. It's called group think. Alot of people can be like lemings and they just go along blindly accepting whatever is dictated to them as being cool or popular. It takes a sense of self to think outside the box and to be an individual.

Being popular is considered important because it validates the popular person giving them a feeling of importance and a feeling that they are loved and accepted. If they valued themselves and their own strengths and talents they would not turn to other people for approval.
Be popular with the right crowd. Secret: being yourself: smart, humerus, caring, sharing. The RIGHT people are ATTRACTED to those who are confident and sunny about it! The alternitive is shallow. And that's not deep. Popularity is tangential. Remember, what's "pop" today pops tomorrow.
Being popular is an introverted "ideal". It is a selve serving aspect of the human pyscy; the need to feel better or exalted. Ask most of those who are popular in school if they feel like they are popular .. there in lies the flaw (in most cases). They dont because being popular is a measure of internal worth and not external value (unless they are selling some thing like movie stars who sell their image). So the striving of those who are popular is a form of psycological defect of sorts. To best see this is to compare those who are popular by positive means and those who are popular by negetive means objectivly. You will see that they are simular in every way with the exception of internal worth cause neither impacts the whole as great as they impact them selves. There is much to be said about positive impact that the popular have the ability to exploit such as those dont do drug ads by popular artists and actors.
There is nothing special about them, thats the thing. Because they are so average, they set the standards for normalcy, and everyone always likes normal. They are the perfect average human beings, and many people strive to be normal and average, because being different is just too hard!
