Whats the best way to turn people on to science?

I am really into science, but I can't usually talk about it because all the people I know don't understand it and have no desire to talk about it. I have accepted this fact about them, but is there any way I can lead a conversation to it or anything like that?

Answer:
You know science can really be interesting if introduced the right way. I don't think the problem is that they don't understand it or don't like it. Maybe, you're not talking about a part of science that they like. Instead, of starting a conversation off talking about science right off the bat, how about asking them what their interests are?

I mean there's computer science if they're interested in computers. Most guys seem to love cars and so you could maybe talk about automotive science. For our animal lovers, you could start off asking them what they think of people who want to or who have cloned their pets. You'll probably get lots of opinions with that question.

You'll find that by getting a feel on what people's interests or hobbies are that you will be able to relate it your love of science in a way that won't turn them off.
People are more interested in something if you can show them how it affects their life directly. If something is abstract to someone they may not see any point so they are not interested.
It's cliche, but true - "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink!"

I have an engineer and a retired nurse who attend family dinners. Even if the conversation gets around to an interesting topic, it just becomes an argument because they went to school EONS ago and they'd rather just gossip, anyway.

Go to where the geeks are, not only will they talk about science, they'll be interested in other things, as well.

By the way, I know that might be difficult because I live in a tiny little town, in the middle of nowhere. I have an uncle who was very well read, smart and witty and he tries, but it's damned near useless.

I've identified an "outdoor" group two hours away who hold monthly meetings and a climbing group comprised of geologists, programmers, etc. I'll be taking a long drive to get my fix. Besides, it's a way to meet new people, yada, yada, yada.
First of all, try to use very simple words when you talk about science. Never use scientific terminology - it is boring for most people. Simplify as much as possible and then your friends will become interested. Once you hook them up you can start using scientific terminology.
Sure. The most effective means of communicating ones unique perceptions, is by using the experiences of the listener to present the examples.
Whatever the topic, science is applicable so the task is easy.
Use ordinary language, and explore answers to questions you cant answer at the time, then take your learning to the table.
No need to be clever and try to explain processes, no need for big terminology. Just be you and find your social comfort level of interraction and all will be fine.
We cannot bring people to levels beyond their understanding, but we can take them to the threshold of that understanding.
It is called experiential learning.
