Distinguish how the ideas of Thomas Szasz differ from those most popular in the medical community regarding mental illness

I'm really tired, I have worked on this all weekend. I thank you VERY much for your help.

Answer:
Put simply, and I could be wrong, Thomas Szasz believed essentially that mental illness was a socially define phenomenon. There really is no such thing as mental illness, it is defined by the culture in which a person is in. Therefore, psychiatric medication did not relieve any medical symptoms, it just makes people think more like the culture and is a form of cultural control, a form of restraint so to speak.
There is some credence to this notion. An Iranian acquaintance of mine told me he was working with Iranians diagnosed as depressed in the USA. He said American psychiatrists did not have much positive effect treating them because they did not realize that many of the symptoms they saw were common traits of Iranian men. Just a different way of looking and coping with the world.
how old are u? what grade?
Sorry. That's a bit beyond me. I'd help if I could.
