Most hypnosis programs work in the Alpha frequency. This is 8-13 cycles and is while your are in a deeply relaxed state but conscious. This allows it to set into your Ego and mix with your creative side.
Some hypnosis programs are needed to happen in the Theta (4 to 7 cycle) frequency which is when you are sleeping. These are typically for pain control though.
while going to sleep, yes. Or just laying and relaxing.
It is not too unusual for a person who is tired to drift into regular sleep. the cds probably not do any good but they are not going to screw you up. If you stay in trance at the deeper levels the suggestions can be very effective. Go by the results and do not create problems that do not exist.
