How prejudice operates? how can prejudice be reduced?
Answer:
Personality theory feels that one type of personality is the consteallatory personality. This particular personality type builds "constellations" out of traits then establishes definitions for them.
For example, the person may establish that a child has the following traits: "youth, small of stature, inexperience, little or no income, physically weaker than adults." Therefore, when they see someone with those traits, they categorize them as a child.
The trouble is that as their life goes on their environment will become more complex, but their style of assessment of personality remains the same. To them, "long hair, pretty voice, wears make up, wears a skirt" may categorize as a "woman", but they may be particularly upset when it also categorizes as "transsexual."
Therefore, they may try to "force fit" certain individuals into the personality definitions they have established as their constellations. Immediately making the claims that the "transsexual" is a "gay male in a skirt" because it's easier for them to amend a previous constellation than to redefine their overall system.
Thus, these people are exceptionally prone to prejudice. The only other choice they have is to restructure their way of thinking, which is not an easy thing to do.
..Prejudice happens when people are "pre-judged" to be unworthy, simply because of a defining characteristic, such a religious belief, gender, race, or age.
Prejudice can be reduced by providing factual information about all kinds of people and their strengths and worthiness - prejudice is fueled by ignorance. It's also the result of a lack of compassion.
Having people like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods in front of the public - highly talented, likable individuals - does a lot to counter stereotypes.
