What are the psychological foundations of rumour?
Answer:
Rumors hold truth to the person who spread the rumor. In most cases the rumor manifests itself as a conscious effort to defame another person for the originator's soul benefit.
The retelling of rumors, and the snowball effect of exageration create a whole new rumor over time. Many Biblical Stories are grand in scope and design..not because they actually happened that way but because men exagerate things to make them seem more important than they really are. It is just the way of things.
Example: I rescue a woman that is about to crash her car into a building by talking her down from the passenger seat.
The story is then retold with me yanking the wheel to save her. Retold again with me touching her on the forehead and whispering a prayer to stop her. Finally it is retold decades later as the man who stood in front of the car and she slammed the breaks and I saved her life.
Edit: I would just like to add that reading comprehension before putting a negative is most appreciated. I said that the person spreading the rumor usually believes it is true or at the very least wishes this, how is that inaccurate?
thats a good one
What a load of BS, Josh. Rumor has deep evolved roots that are surrendering to empirical investigation. We are social animals and such animals need news about conspecifics, whether it is that accurate or not. Your reputation may truly proceed you and the " grape vine " was the only news for over a million years. Look to the work of John Tooby and Leda Cosmides, for two psychologists work in the social area. Not the usual superficial psychobabble.
