I need some pointers on how to answer some lay counseling questions?
I am a lay counciler and I need to answer a few questions that a person is going to ask me. That person will have a problem such as divorse or money problems. I need to listen to them and give some decent advice. How would I go about that?
Answer:
Just so you know, counsellors or psychologists do not give their clients advice. We give them strategies and they can use it or leave it. Additioanally, we help them come up with solutions themselves through techniques like brainstorming or problem solving. By giving advice, we almost expect them to do what we say.
Regarding specific step-by-step questions, here's an idea --- read up a book on interviewing techniques or interviewing skills as well as books on counselling skills. I know I did before I had to do my internship. You'll learn more that way than getting it on FunQA.com!
Good luck!
Let them know you understand, be supportive and try and imagine yourself in their shoes. Good luck x
Ask your clients what, in their own opinion, could be the best remedy for their own problem. Most people know what to do, they may need help with a choice of more than one good solutions, or with a feasible way of implementation, or with support--ask how you can be of help, and offer a friendly, nonjudgmental ear that will allow them to voice their problem and arrive at their own conclusions. Good luck on your counseling!
