Phobia of talking on the phone?
I always sound like a mumbling idiot on the phone and its akward and just bad. how can i fix it?
without therapy or anything like that.
Answer:
I am SO with you here. Unfortunately my job requires me to talk on the phone A LOT!
I would suggest before picking up the phone get a clear idea of what you want to say. (there are some things that you can't plan for but...) If you are confident about your end of the conversation you will not be tripped up as easy.
Also realize that there are MANY people who feel this way and you are probably on the phone with one of them! Don't look at the conversation as a critique of you but as a conversation between two uncomfortable people.
Then there is always practice. In private practicing speech (elocution) If you (like me) have to say the same thing on the phone to different people (NO I'm not a telemarketer) Practice your delivery into a phone or even into your voice mail so you can hear how you sound by replaying it.
My only other bit of advice is DON'T THINK! Don't sit and dread the call you have to make. Trust me it will build itself up in your mind to be this awful experience. Just pick up the phone and dial the number. It will be over before you know it!
Good luck!!
Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind.
Are you self conscious about how you sound on the phone?
If so, relax in the fact that most people feel that way about how they sound played back. Just remember the person you're talking to doesn't feel the way you do- they almost certainly don't care about how you sound.
Your friends- don't care how your phone voice is.
Family - again, they don't give.
bf/gf- you're gonna be nervous anyway so..
business- they are listening to what you are saying not how you are saying it.
i would say to just practice because the more you do it the better you get. i sometimes have that problem as well because i am shy. if you want to practice just call one of your close friends that you know really well and just talk, or maybe a family member. good luck
I have this same problem. Unless its my mom, my fiance, or a place I have called many, many many times, then I am always nervous, I stumble over my words, and I just don't know what to say. I am not sure there is a way to fix it, but practicing will help. Start with talking to people you know, family, friends. And try to build up from there.
Hypnotherapy is probably one of the best ways to cure a phobia.
