Anxiety about an upcoming event. please help!!?
I live in the Philly suburbs and I've never been to New York before, not to mention the fact that my parents won't be with me and the concert (they'll be at dinner somewhere in the city.)
My friend is not too supportive with this kind of stuff, and i do have a history of anxiety/panic attacks. I get very nauseous and short of breath.
I don't want to miss the concert, but I don't know If I can go without freaking out and looking stupid in front of my friend.
Can someone please help me, the concert is only 2 weeks away!
Answer:
Within these two weeks before the concert, try to talk to someone you trust and close to about your anxiety problems. As the saying goes, "don't bottle 'em up, just spill 'em out". From there on you can then work out your problems when you open out to somebody. Trust me, you will feel better and most importantly enjoy yourself more at the concert.
I know you said you generally have anxiety and panic attacks,so try to relax, take deep breaths and try not to think about the concert so much. You are building it up in your mind to the point where it is affecting your health. If you can not relax and suffer from the panic attacks you should consider giving up the ticket so your health does not suffer. You can also try something like exercises to alleviate the stress.if this does not work you might want to see a doctor about your condition.
JUST BE COOL!! ITS NOT A LIFE AND DEATH SITUATIONS JUST ENJOY AND HAVE A GOOD TIME. KEEP COOL!ENJOY THE CONCERT!1
I was the same way when I was younger and I am still that way to some extent. The big city, all of the crowd and noise at the concert, all of the weird people that will be at the concert, there might be trouble of some kind at the concert, or even an accident coming or going to and from the concert. I am not sure that you should go if you feel anxious about it. Most people do not understand panic attacks but I sure do. I have been having them all of my life and I still do from time to time. Be honest with your friend. If he or she does not understand then they must not be a friend to begin with. Almost every time I went to a concert or something similar, and I had anxiety about it prior to the event, I had a terrible time and panic attacks and wished that I had not gone. You do what you feel is best for you and dont worry about what others will think. David.
Hi! I think I have a solution, but you’ll have to put in a little work over the next 2 weeks! I suggest you try Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It’s really effective for panic attacks and general anxiety. It takes a bit of work, but is super effective.
You can take a course for free online at: http://www.livinglifetothefull.com/elear... (A ‘prettier’ version of this type of programme can be bought at www.thewellnessshop.co.uk) Otherwise you can use the book by Dr Robert Burns, The Feeling Good Handbook which basically teaches CBT.
I bet you if you do the free online course everyday for 2 weeks, you’ll be feeling much better about everything. And I’m pretty sure that feeling will last too. You might think "this isn't going to work!" but you have to stick at it!
Also, if ever you feel anxious or panicky, please remember this: if you control your breathing, you control panic. Breathe in slowly through your nose pushing your tummy out (to the count of 5 or so). Breathe out slowly and for a bit longer through your mouth. Do not breathe rapidly or shallowly (in the chest area). It is always in your power to stop a panic attack!
Good luck! I hope you make the concert. It would be a real shame to miss out.
