What type of education or training do people have to do in general to become psychologists?
Answer:
You need to earn a Ph.D. in Psychology.
So, you'd most likely need a Bachelor's degree (4 yrs in school) first. There are some Ph.D. programs that allow you to earn your Master's while you earn your Ph.D., but most require you to earn your Master's first (2 years).
Your best bet might be to find a good undergraduate program in Psychology to earn your BA or BS and to learn about the different areas. As you near graduation, you could research and apply to graduate programs that are focused in the areas of Psychology that you are most interested in.
If you are still in high school, you might get good information from your guidance counselor. You could also research Psychology programs online and request that they send you information on their programs.
Good luck!
They have to major in phsycology in college; theres not much more to it!
You must have a Ph.D. 6 - 8 years of schooling.
Sure. Four Years undergrad in a University to get your bachelor's preferrably in Psychology. Then you can get your PsychD. Or your Ph.D in Psychology. Look up the University of your choice and go to their website to see if they have the information readily available about getting your Ph.D. The it'll tell you exactly what you need.
Pepperdine University in California Offers a Psych.D, University of southern California and the University of california at Los Angeles offer Ph.D's in Psychology
To even start thinking about practicing you need to get a master's in psychology though it is best to go and earn your Ph.D which is also good to have if later down the road you decide to teach. There are many fields of psychology and I don't really understand what you mean about only the important things. I would recommend going onto a universities site and look up what you would need from a university that you would actually go to and try to research different areas of psychology to find out exactly what classes and training you will need. I am a psychology student entering my junior year and have done alot of research on my major to find out what area I want to specialize in and to make sure it is what I want to do.
