Why do we have dreams? and do only humans have them?

Answer:
idk, maybe our brain gets bored...i think dogs probably have dreams. i know this dog who, when he sleeps, he'll start growling and kicking. he must be have a dream, i guess...
I just googled "why do we dream" and there are a ton of websites with that information. I'm sure there are just as many theories.

I have a dog and she dreams. She whimpers in her dreams, I believe because she is barking in her dreams. She loves being chased, playing tag as it were, so she's probably dreaming about that.
Nope, all intelligent creatures dream. Cats, dogs, dolphins, monkeys, all appear to have varying degrees of REM activity.

Nobody's quite sure why we dream.

Scientists think that the dreams of today are experienced when your unconscious tries to form new connections and memory associations with memories and associations from your newly stored memories.
All hippy crap aside, it's probably your brain's version of the defrag feature on your computer.

It's a fact that you will die if you go to long without REM sleep.

I'm pretty sure, and anyone who lives with a dog can probably vouch for this, that other animals do dream.
a lot of animals have dreams; my friends dog used to have nightmares.

when we are asleep, are brain is still thinking, it our subconscious. the thing is, we have no conscious to decide whether something is realistic or not, so thats why anything can happen in dreams. when we start to wake up, and we're like half asleep, the dreams start to have more boundaries on the dreams, and they tend to get more realistic.

we dream about what we were last thinking about before we fell asleep, and it kind of takes off from there.
Animals do dream....As to why we have dreams, some are related to what's in our subconscious...Our memories, hopes or fears.....They say that if your dream is very vivid upon awakening it's somehow trying to tell you something from the past, present or future...They also say that you will never dream you see yourself dead.....So far, all these things they say have proven out several times with my dreams....CAT
Dreaming is the mind's way of relieving stress and recharging/refreshing itsself. Other reasons for why we dream are a matter of cultural opinion. For example, it is believed in some cultures that while the body sleeps, one's soul leaves the body and visits other planes of existence - free of the restraints of the physical world. It is also believed that dreams are symbolic, offering insight into the future. Not only people dream. Other mammals do, as well. Here are a couple links. I hope this answers your questions.

Only humans use words, including the word dream. Try to say anything to yourself without using any words. Tough, isn't it? Dream is a word. Does dreaming exist without the ability to say it? Doubtful! There is something happening in their minds, if that is what they have, but because we only have our words and our meanings to express it: it is hard to say. They may not be dreaming, but we surely are!
