It's all a part of the amazing diversity of humanity. Even though we have much in common with our fellow human beings, people are SO different, including the way they laugh - it's almost a signature!
I have a low-key laugh, kind of a heh-heh. My spouse has a scream laugh...sometimes scares the crap out of me when I don't expect it.
I would think it has to do with the configuration of their air passages and their breathing patterns. When involved in something like sneezing, coughing, laughing or any other activity that involves "spasmodic" muscular contractions, one cannot always control the sound that is produced.
While, for the most part, we consciously control the outward functions of our bodies, there are some essential, life-supporting, functions that the body will take over and perform on its own when we are temporarily rendered unable to do so.
The intake of air is one of those. When the muscles and air passages are positioned just right (or just wrong - depending on your viewpoint) that can produce a "snorting" sound.
In short, I think it is an involuntary action that takes over when the musculature involved in the deliberate, conscious action of breathing is otherwise occupied by the action of laughing.

It is my understanding that Jewish people don't snort because they don't eat pork. Do you eat pork before you snort? Did you oink as a child?
Breathing to fast causes this sound.
its something people choose to do. i see it as an easy attention grabber. for example: a cute girl will start laughing.. a guy thats very interested might hear it, and think to himself,"how cute!" another girl over hearing it, would probably think.. what a freakin moron!
sometimes it just turns into a habit, but i honestly think its to grab attention, even if its negative attention..

I have done that on rare occasion because I was laughing so had I needed air.
