I seem to have anxiety about speaking up and talking to people whether it be in a class or just a family gathering. Some things are okay-like I can talk to the person sitting next to me in class or call/email both known and unknown people for, say, appt's but some things I find impossible. I think it's the actual face to face interaction. I try to avoid it b/c it gives me anxiety for some reason. At family gatherings-everyone is like ten years older than me save for a couple of people. I'm at the younger end of the age line and I find it impossible to speak to anyone. I feel intimidated and excessively self conscious.but when I was younger I was sometimes bullied (but it was only in day care, preschool, kind., second, third, and ninth grades)-could that have something to do with it? Is social anxiety easy to help? Is like everyone says- just go and start speaking? I don't know where this fear comes from, but it's like a barrier-and I know it's looked down upon not like socializing
Answer:
I think poor peer relationships can cause social anxiety immediately, and yes they can last for a long time. The only way to break this pattern of behavior you describe is to take small manageable steps. Start off with simple goals, and focus on them one at a time. Eye contact, is a great place to start. Then you should move on to speaking loudly and clearly. Practice these things at every available opportunity. The best way to conquer your fear is to take it head on in little steps, and while you may not see immediate results, if you stay committed, you will see improvement from week-to-week and month-to-month.
