Empathy test?

OK, you're in the desert, you see a tortoise lying on its back, struggling, and you're not helping -- why is that?

Answer:
Your question clearly states that the viewer is NOT helping, so the only reason I can think of as to why I would not be helping this poor struggling turtle, is because I want the turtle to be self sufficient and to learn how to help himself in times that he may not have someone around to assist him.
Not sure why I wouldnt be helping...I think I would be helping it...
Well, if I saw a tortoise lying on it's back, I would turn it over. There is no reason I wouldn't be helping.
i would have to help it
tortoise don't live in the desert
A tortoise on its back in the desert will die. I would turn it over. What are you getting at?
If I wasn't helping it, then I hope it is because I am a strong believer in Darwin's principle of the survival of the fittest and I don't want the tortoise to pass on genes that would cause it to other tortoise's to make the same mistake.
But, the fact is I would probably get a stick (tortoises are carriers of salmonella) and flip the tortoise over because one good turn deserves another! ;-) (Sorry, I just started mentally free associating !)
I had my money on the hare to win the race.
Who are You to tell me that I am not helping? You are assuming something that is beyond your knowledge: Whether I would help or not.
Maybe the real question is: why are you projecting onto me some behavior that you have no idea about?
Are you projecting your own behavior onto me and asking me to justify your action or lack of action?
i have never seen a tortoise in a desert
I would help the tortoise unless I was unable. God bless****
Optical illusion.
The only situation that would make that decision palatable is if you are on a special assignment to study nature in the wild and one of your mandates is not to interfere with or manipulate nature, just observe it. The results of the study could help the tortoise species in the long term, even though that specific tortoise may die prematurely.

However, in any other case, the choice is clear. Save the animal. All sentient beings, in fact, all beings, should be valued as worthy of our caring and support.
