What types of things go on in a cutter's brain that makes them enjoy cutting themselves?
Answer:
Simple enough. endorphines, and attention. the reaction they get societally by cutting them self proves that someone actually cares about what they do, but internally the brain releases a cocktail of chemicals when your body is injured, everything from antidepressants to painkillers. some people get addicted to these chemicals when they begin to see them as a way out of the emotional pain they feel.
i dont know, find an emo and ask them
I'm guessing that pain is good. Atleast that's what I think they're thinking. Well I definitely don't think so because for me pain is plain painful. Who in their right mind wants that (ya know what I mean?)?
that they're depressed and it feels like that noone really cares and maybe they think they aren't meant to be in the world and the pain feels good too but why a plastic spoon
they are relieving themselves of emotional pain by giving themselves physical pain
It varies, but for a lot of cutters, it's an outer expression of inner pain that their mind can't deal with or relate. The sensation and the end result makes them forget the pain they're avoiding. They're often in a state of emotional turbulence when they feel the need to cut.
Other people are fixated on the pain and visual appeal of cuts, while it's no less dangerous or serious, they often don't have as strong direct emotional responses. When they cut, they may be less emotional, but instead become fixated on seeing the cuts.
Some people are simply masochists. Others use it as a tool of control. When every thing else is crazy in their life, they can control this, they can control the pain. I was a cutter for a year before a friend made me promise to stop. And that's what it was for me. Control. When I could not control any thing else in my life.
mostly its a way of distancing themselves from emotional pain..like if the are in physical pain, it is easier to ignore the emotional stuff. like a kind of escape?
there are also people who derive sexual pleasure from pain. i assume the client was more this kind, if he was all hyped up from it.
i have heard that it is either for attention or to make them selves feel real
Repetition of a bad strategy.
They develop a strategy for dealing with internal pain that involves the application of something sharp to turn that pain into external pain. Except it doesn't stop the pain from going away, merely intensifies it in a second place.
What they need is to be taught a new and more useful strategy for dealing with pain.
Where do you work?! I can't speak for all who are self-injurers, but I don't get enjoyment out of doing it. I do it because I hate myself a lot of the time and I deserve the punishment because I feel like such a worthless piece of sh*t. I really can't think of anything enjoyable about that.
