Why do I make myself scared?
My entire life I have been scared alone at night in the dark. I'm a big 265 pound burly bearded man... not some little kid. Yet I drive myself crazy thinking that there are either killers lurking at my door, or there are supernatural beings floating around my room. I just lie there making things up in my head, or remember horror movies and eventually scare myself. I have never had an actual experience of anything like this really happening to me, but when the lights are out or my eyes are closed, my mind starts to wander and I inevitably freak myself out. I have to go to sleep with my TV on every single night, and I have to lock every door and window, check every closet, check the shower, just to put my mind at ease. It's getting kinda old. Any thoughts/suggestions?

First of all - it's really big of you to admit something that a lot of people feel, but feel wimpy about saying. Since fear is the number one motivator in most people's lives, it's definitely not uncommon for most people to have many fears.
There are all kinds of things to you can do to alleviate these fears, though. There's a great technique that you can do yourself, that really works. Check out this site. http://www.emofree.com/ If you practice this every night, I'll bet it will help a lot. Also something else that will help is to plug in night lights around your place. They don't take up as much energy as a television, and you never have to be in the dark!
You probably have an overactive imagination, try to do something distracting before going to bed, like reading a book (not a scary one) or the newspaper until you feel really tired.
God is bigger than the boogie man, he's bigger than godzilla or the monsters on Tv yes God is bigger than the boogie man and he's watching over you and me :)

the righteous run into the tower of God and they are saved, he is a strong tower that will help you in times of need (and times of good) psalms 34 and 37, i can't find the verse i'm looking for but all of psalms is good!

I do this a little bit too, albeit to a lesser extent.
Try exercizing before bedtime, or take a sleep pill to help you get to sleep. All of the built up anxiety can keep you awake.
If you want to feel safer? Dimmed lights/nightlight, alarm system, dogs, and a gun, probably in that order. I sleep with my dog in the bedroom (nonsexually...) and I am always confident that she would notice if something was amiss.

When I was younger here's how i got over my fear of the dark. when you lay down at night turn off all the lights for 5 or 10 minutes, and just lay there thinking of jokes, songs or happy memories and don't let yourself turn on the lights until your preset time limit is up, the next night do it for s little longer and keep increasing the time limit each day and pretty soon you'll be able to stay in the dark for hours on end. Plus remember the only thing to fear is fear it's self.
