Do they know there is a problem? If not, it is time to talk to them and the sooner the better. Teens can be open with their feelings with friends often and not so forthcoming with parents and family at the same time. Talk to the family immediately!

make him understand that love is only part of his life.And make him feel like some big hero and there are more people who are there to love him.As if a crowd is waiting out there just for him to come up and lead them and save them.
Sounds dramatical, but it will work out virtually, when executed properly with your friends and not very huge.
But careful, he shouldn't feel as if he have lost his self respect just becoz people have started knowing his emotions and are trying to convince and advise him.If this intention comes within them he will never hear what you say.All he sees is n number of people advising for his welfare, which might tickle his ego again and develop his inferiority, which will make him even worse.
