Help with focusing?

I'm going to school to become a stenographer. This major requires me to sit for long periods of time practicing dictation. Sometimes I find it difficult to maintain concentration, either because I'm tired or I have other things on my mind. Are there any tricks you know that help you focus your mind on one thing and block out anything else?

Answer:
Well, if concentration and focusing on the moment is hard for you, maybe there's a career that would be a better natural fit for you. I've heard that people are happiest when they can use their natural skills daily in their professions.
On the other hand, practice will improve your listening skills. I'm guessing that eventually it comes naturally and stenographers most likely take less and less energy to focus on dictation as they remain in their career. Make sure you're not tired and that you separate work from the rest of your life; if you tell yourself mentally that as you enter work (or practice setting) "okay this is work now I've got to focus on my job and I will think about everything else as soon as I have my lunch break. But for now I am only concerned with what is said" then you're shifting your mental focus. Maybe there's one flavor of gum or perfume you can wear ONLY to work/practice; that could help you shift into the right mindset also. Until dictation comes more naturally for you, you may try getting really into the story. Identify with the people talking by pretending you're friends, family, whatever but if the information is relevant to you, you will pay more attention. Closing your eyes sharpens your sense of sound too, so it may help you concentrate if you close your eyes while you dictate for now.
Meditation XD.... when i try too sleep, i have so many things in my mind, so i sit on my bet, close my eyes and count backwards from 100 too 1.. i think only the numbers or nothing... when im done and try too sleep, i have nothing on my mind, its completly blank.. try it, it worked for me... gimme the best if it worked for you
