Are aliens physical or part of a cognitive shift, such as altered brainwaves?
It seems like most of the time when people see aliens or are abducted by them, they are either going to sleep or waking up from a dream. I have a wierd theory, that alien abductions are part of a half-sleep called hyper-awareness, (perhaps aided by chemical imbalances)- and that alien visitation is a part or a slightly more awake version of that- hypnogogia, where theyre awake enough to still be in their rooms, but too asleep to move.
ANyone have any comments on this?
Answer:
You're starting to make many judgmental errors.
1) where did you get the statistics for 'most people who have seen aliens or abducted by them are either going to sleep or waking from a dream'? I doubt this is true.
2) Also, just because wikipedia states that hypnogogia or 'sleep paralysis' can be accompanied by ideas of alien abduction, doesn't mean that it happens all the time.
Sleep paralysis is a purely common phenomenon and only a very small and insignificant percentage of people report 'otherworldly experiences'. In order for alien abduction experiences to be a part of 'sleep paralysis' it has to happen significantly often among ppl who experience 'sleep paralysis'.
3) Chemical imbalances that affect sleep states do not significantly affect awareness or state of consciousness. In fact chemical imbalances and dysfunctioning nerve cells reduce occurrence of REM sleep or dream sleep.
4) A cognitive shift means a change in cognitive mechanisms. This includes mental processes like memory, attention, problem solving, categorization, metacognition. 'Altered brainwaves', whatever they are, are not cognitive shifts.
5) Brainwaves only come in relatively few forms. Alpha, beta, theta, delta. These vary in terms of sleep and waking activity. Brain waves are a measure of the total average activity of neurons as measured from an EEG or electroencephalogram machine on the scalp. The more the neurons in the scalp fires and the faster they fire; the higher the frequency of the brainwave.
Think of frequencies as how often neurons fire as a measure of activity instead of like changing radio or tv 'channels'.

But seriously,
Your basically saying "it's all in thier mind". Yeah. I'll agree with that.
Some people claim to have met aliens or been abducted while on highways - fully awake.
Interstellar travel has a host of obstacles to overcome. Any living crew on one of these vessels would have to reproduce, as it would take generations to get to even the closest planet.
Life in a weightless environment is debilitating, even if you're in suspended animation.
The vessels allegedly fly at very high rates of speed and make 90 degree turns. The g forces involved in doing something like this are enough to rip your brain in half, so I seriously doubt that the crew is made up of living organisms.
The crew might be made up of androids, however. This would negate all the problems brought up by living things traveling such long distances at such high rates of speed. So, I think that 'alien' visitors are just possible.
