What are your opinions on self injury?
I freaking hate that because some loser decided to make it into a trend and they don't realize how serious it can be.
By the way I was a bad cutter when I was 12 (way before I heard what emo was just so you know). And I continued cutting until I was caught and sent to counseling when I was 13 (that was a pretty bad year, I also considered suicide and saw that life had no meaning). I still continue to do it today...not as bad though. I'm really trying my best to stop. I just can't help to do it when I'm in a horrible situation...
Answer:
My opinion - it's not a good idea, but i can't talk as i do it myself.
i want to say this as a warning to anyone who may be tempted: DO NOT START. you WILL get addicted and you WILL get scarred. and it's so hard to stop.
you're lucky you got counselling after a year - i've been cutting for three years and am too scared to get help. i am trying to stop, same as you, and know how hard it can be. you say you can't help but cut in a bad situation, but you could try to find a safer alternative to cutting. see my question on alternatives:

or email me for more ideas.
to try and stop, set yourself little goals of a number of days to go without cutting, then when you reach that goal treat yourself (no cutting!) then set a longer goal, treat yourself. keep setting longer goals until eventually you stop.
Please feel free to email me if you ever want to talk, as i know talking to people, especially those with similar problems, can really help.
Keep trying your best to stop - it is hard but will be worth it in the end!
Stay strong, stay safe.
obivoulsy my opinion on self injury is that it is bad.
You should be in serious counseling and probably on medication. How sad that people do these things to themselves.
I think ones who self-injure are hurting inside. Their emotions/feelings are not being handled or dealt with.
They are expressing their pain by cutting or injuring self.
It is not necessarily to HURT self, as strange as that may sound. A lot of them don't like pain. They sometimes use it to punish theirself for guilt they are holding in, too.
Please read on for more help on this, these articles are great for helping to understand this behavior.
been there done that. It is just a precursor to killing yourself. That is if you have the courage. I don't I am a coward don't have the nades to do it. Wish I did. Life sucks then you die. Death probably sucks too it just the nature of things.
Life is difficult enough for me, I don't need to self inflict phsyical pain. My shoulda, coulda, woulda mental abuse is just all I can take. There are professionals that could help you learn to stop, but you gotta realize that life is difficult for everyone, we just handle it differently and not neccessarily better. Good luck in your battle with your demons.
I had a really good friend in high school that cut, I tired my best to be there for her but I wasn't enough so I told an adult friend of ours that was a school psychologist . She soon stopped and made it through the tough time.
I understand it to an extent but believe self control is what people need to learn. Self control can help you stop all destructive acts in your life. Choice, EVERYTHING is a choice.
Self-injury is a coping mechanism, nothing more nothing less. It really bothers me when people say its sick or demented or "crazy". It's a way to deal when you have exhausted all other methods. Admittedly maybe not the healthiest way but it works, and despite what people think it keeps you alive more often than not. You self harm to keep yourself from doing other things. It's like taking the lid off of a pressure cooker, to allow yourself to breath for just a little while longer.
I cut too. I had quit but recently I really sunk low and really hurt myself. I have a therapist and I also talk to some adults who I trust not to tell. Everyone had a different opinion on the subject but there are so many support systems out there. True, it is a coping mechanism and it actually ISNT a precursor to killing yourself. Here are some websites that have helped me deal and understand my problem:
healthboards.com (they have a Self-Injury board)
http://www.focusas.com/selfinjury.html...
http://www.self-injury.net/
http://www.drinkdeeplyanddream.com/realv...
http://www.palace.net/~llama/psych/injur...
and there are also dozens of articles about it online. Just look up "Self-Injury" or "Self Mutilation" and I promise you so much information will come up and it will really help.
And trust me, so many people have self-injured, such as Princess Diana and Johnny Depp. And it seems like it helps but it makes things worse... I should know. I'm 18 and I've been struggling with it since I was in middle school (like you, way before "emo" was even a thought in somebody's head).
Hope I helped :)
