Do you think the American culture is materialistic? why or why not?

Yes I do. It seems to me that the main goal of most Americans to have as many personal possessions as possible. It's sort of a "keep of with the Jones" mentality. People work long and hard hours to get the best house in the best neighborhood, drive the nicest car & put their kids in the right schools. Even young people have started to model themselves after some of the Hollywood celebs who seem so shallow, but wear the right clothes and are always at the hottest spots. People are buying into that like it's the way to happiness and contentment. Meanwhile, families are falling apart with a 50% divorce rate and kids feel like they have to have the right stuff to fit in. I think we need to go back to the basics and make family and home our main focus again. It's not how much stuff you have that makes you happy long term. It's having peace and joy inside and being with the ones you love. We have become a spoiled, materialistic society, but I have hope that one day people will start raising their children to have different values for their lives like being a good, kind human being that cares more about others than they do what they are wearing!
Yes I do. One example is when Oprah was criticized for opening a school in Africa. Her response to the criticism was that the children in the US would have appreciated an IPOD more than a new school.
