What "I don't know..." really means?
Answer:
because often telling the truth would mean admitting the truth, or even just facing it, and that often makes people uncomfortable. Much easier to just say I don't know, and continue to ignore that which makes us uncomfortable.
i hate that crap! and yes. i think so.
the worst, though is when the same people who say "i don't know" for every question you ask them, say "i know" after everything you TELL them. so, which is it? are you stupid, or do you know it all? make up your friggin' mind! that stuff kills me!
fear of reprisal is probably the answer. Means the thought they had a good reason for doing something but if someone catches you then you can safely assume it wasn't right and are afraid to admit it. A man weaving down the road in his car (I assume)(although I know of a guy who drove his tractor down the road when he was drunk cause he said he had no transportation and didn't want to drive his car when he was drunk), is probably a different case because when drunk they aren't thinking straight.
Generally, and in everyday life, people use the response "I don't know" because they really don't know the answer. There are answers like "yes", "no", "maybe" is an answer so therefore "I don't know" could very well be an answer as well.
its because they dont want to tell the truth. ive tried it both ways and the end result is the same, except with i dont know, you usually dont hear as long of a speech to how wrong you were.
hopefully peolpe are saving I don't know for when they really don't know the answer and not to be lazy. yes i said lazy. It's scary how many people don't want to think. if i don't know something i say exactly that, but if i think something i say i think or i believe .but i could be wrong. at least i tried. i really like this question. thank you.
This is kinda like "Why did you climb the mountain?" Because it was there. most of the time, people do things because they think they won't get caught. The operative word being THINK because, if there were a thought process, normal rational educated people, wouldn't do it.
