Why is fear necessary in life?
Answer:
It is not really necessary; as long as you have faith and love.
So we don't get eaten by lions and tigers. Just my guess.
To keep us alert. If we go around not fearing anything then we'll end up doing something that might harm us or kill us.
If no living thing had a fear of death and injury, it would make no attempt to protect itself. It would become extinct in a very short time.
it kicks in when there is an emergency-- if there was a problem and we were relaxed about it, we wouldn't get much done, now would we?

The answers above suggest we need it to identify threats and deal with them accordingly. But we needn't fear heights to know that a fall can injure us, and to act appropriately. We needn't fear wild animals to know what danger they pose and to behave accordingly.
Fear is an irrational response to the thought of not having our needs met. It begins in infancy when our food doesn't arrive when we are hungry, or our diapers aren't changed and we feel abandoned.
Fear is what we feel before we develop patience and understanding.

Like if you would stand on the edge of a high building without being afraid... You might feel like jumping (not to kill yourself), but fear will stop you.
I think fear protects us, as long as it's well dosed. To much fear will be harmful as well.
A selfish and self-centered fear can be at the root of every harmful thing someone does to others.
Distrustful of God is the number one source of this.
