I write really eloquent essays, but When I talk to people, verbally, I sound so dull?
thanks in advance.
Answer:
Written expression and oral expression are two very different skills. When you write an easy you can revise and edit as much as you like; you can hone your essay so that it becomes eloquent and interesting. Talking to someone requires spontaneity, quick thinking and an ability to become involved in give and take. It is an evolving interaction. A very different process than producing an essay for someone to read.
Practice.
perhaps you spending too much time on the computer has dulled your communication skills.
My first inclination is to say this: You are probably high in Linguistic Intelligence. However, that intelligence is more finely honed when dealing with the written word rather than the spoken word:

Maybe you're not particularly spontaneous. Given time to think, write, correct, delete and polish, your words are effective. However, in conversation, you can't rely on the refining process as in writing your thoughts. Has anyone said that you're dull, or is this something you've come up with? I suggest a rewrite on this opinion!!
I understand what you're saying. I can write out some very good letters to address a lot of problems, write sweet poetry & even come up with a good book report on a subject. But talking to people? Unless I know them very well (wife, brother, sister, best friend) then I find that I am clumsy with my ideas. Clumsy in my verbal responses and I don't know why either. But it doesn't bother me to any great degree; exsaperated sometimes but that's about it.
My wife says that it is because when I'm writing I have time to think out my process. But. When I'm talking to people my brain is going faster than my tongue, my tongue can't manage to keep up with my thoughts. I'm told I think too fast and unable to speak it well enough to get my ideas across without appearing clumsy.
Damn near got into a fight over it once at a party. An acquaintance was mocking my speech pattern. Man it took a lot to keep my hands in my pocket.
Perhaps it is the same with you, your thought process is going a lot more quicker than your tongue can manage to articulate.
I do the same thing. I write like the writers I admire. But I speak like the morons I work with.
I do the same thing. I am going to be in two honor english classes next year, but I find it hard and embarrassing when I talk to some people I am not close to on the phone. I think that this is because when we write, we have time to think about what we write about, then go back and fix it. But when we talk on the phone it is a raw conversation, we can't stop and think and then talk. Its just something that happens. And with an essay, we have a thesis statement or SOMETHING to go by, but not in conversations. Sometimes conversations are just so boring and you can't think of anything to say. For example, if you say, "I really liked your shoes." And they say "Thanks" what do you say back to that? Your welcome? then what do THEY say back to that? It is all so confusing.
