How can I overcome my fear of spiders? I have a major fear of them.?
Answer:
Psychologists who specialise in treating phobias often also include a cognitive component as part of the treatment to help the phobic individual deal with anxiety producing thoughts associated with the phobia. When conducted well the process produces little discomfort but it is important to be guided through the therapy by a psychologist who is experienced at providing this form of treatment as there is typically a right way and a wrong way to approach the phobic situation. Simply approaching the fearful situation without the right knowledge and technique can lead to an increase in the phobic response and or increase the likelihood of unnecessary discomfort. Often desensitisation to phobias can be achieved using imagination techniques a method which has recently led to the use of virtual reality simulation/desensitisation. This method is also proving very effective in reducing and in many cases eliminating phobic symptoms without initially having to come into contact with the phobic situation.
-Look at pictures of spiders until you get use to seeing them
-Kill any spider you see in your house. start by using bug spray. when you get use to doing that, kill spiders with a tissue.
-if you see a spider outside. try standing around it until you feel comfortable. DON'T run away. face them dead on
read up on them. do enough research to realize that your fears are unfounded.
Good question!
I'm deathly afraid of them too! I have actually called someone to come and kill a big one that went behind the file cabinet at work then threaten to quit if they didn't hire an exterminator!
Some fears I think you just have to live with..Just avoid them in every way possible. Its what I do;)
Good Luck!
