Is there such thing as a little bit of Asperger's?
When I went on a disabilities course, someone said lots of people have Asperger's and there's probably someone in this room with a little bit of Asperger's (I thought he was looking at me when he said this). Can you have a very mild version of it?
For example, I can't make friends or talk in a group but it doesn't really bother me. I've always been told I'm shy but I can stand up in front of a roomful of people to talk about something without getting nervous. I'm also obsessed with routine and time. However, I'm not clumsy and I've never had an obsessive fixation with something. Is it just my personality or could it be something more and if so is it worth being diagnosed?
Answer:
there are many mental disorders and conditions that i think most of us can identify with many symptoms. when the symptoms begin to get severe and effect ones life, then it may become recognised and diagnosed.
i also feel that asperger's has turned into an acceptable expression for mild autism, as few kids i meet with an asperger's diagnosis, match the research criteria of asperger's original study.
parents need to get a diagnosis for their kids if they need or are looking for support - financially; education; respite care etc. but for an adult, there's no point unless your life is seriously effected!
Autism is on a spectrum and as such many people can have a little bit causing particular symptoms if it is not creating any problems I wouldn't worry too much and get a diagnosis if its affecting your life go to your GP and seek help. .
Unless you have some problem that is causing you distress, why are you looking for a diagnosis of mental illness?
You're healthy, enjoy it!
I believe there is a little in all of us ..I know a child very close to me that actually has been diagnosed with aspergers. He was diagnosed at 4 and is now 13 and you would never know it, if you didn't know what to look for ,anyway it's no big deal and it ranges from extreme to very mild.Hey all of us on here could have well all of us who are obsessed with answers. They say Einstein and Mozart did even Bill Gates..Just be who you are and don't worry...
Youve either got it or not! your cant be a little bit dead can you!
.if you dont feel confident doing something then that quality might get left behind...the easiest way of chatting is to find a shared interest / sense of humour...etc.then build from there...
A definition of Aspergers is "High functioning autism". If you really want to know get a prognosis off your doctor. It hasn't bothered you up to now & there isn't much that you can do about it anyway
If you read around the subject you will find that most people display some ASD traits, we all get obsessive about something, but WE don't necessarily notice. One of the basic tenets of educational psychology seems to be that everything exists in every individual, it just happens that Autusm Spectrum Disorders are expanded or over developed functions of the mind that most people do not display. As to Aspergers, it is a very broad area and can be very mild. Some people are more social that others, and this is another character trait ofter associated with ASD, either the Social or Anti-Social traits can be associated with Aspergers. So, the answer is, I believe, that there is such a thing as a little bit of Aspergers.but it isn't unusual - I will run a mile if presented with a party situation, but addapt strategies enabling me to operate in society. If pressed I suspect most people would admit to similar self knowledge. Personally I would not worry about a diagnosis, but again, that is a private decision which should be based upon what you know of yourself.
My 12 year old cousin allegedgly (my auntie says so!) has a mild Aspergus. On the surface, if you you didn't know him and met him you would view him as a normal kid (bright, a little overweight, into computer games, footie) but a rude, arrogant spoilt brat. He has behavioral problems and sulks a lot, always arguing with him mum and has hit her in the past but he does show a loving side too - he has been assessed and the doctors have told my auntie that he has a mild form of Aspergers.

"A little bit" aspergers is something that is found in some guys, but not women. It has something to do with that X chromosome you girls have. Girls that have it tend to have it bad.
I have full blown aspergers and I'm a guy. I have no problem speaking to a large audience. I don't like crowds, but I don't fear them. I prefer to live alone.
Growing up, its normal for an aspie guy to ALWAYS be the last kid picked for the team. Its because we tend to be Klutzes.
It sounds like you are incorrectly associating normal shyness with aspergers. Its just not the same thing. Based on your description, I don't think you have aspergers - not even a little bit. Take this test if you are worried about it:

If you have went through your life so far with no diagnosis of Aspergers you must be alright usually a teacher, a parent or a relative would spot this when you are young.
It has been around a long time you know, I dont think you show any of the characteristics. Just a shy quiet disposition, this is your wonderful personality.
If you feel socially inadequate or excluded this can be worked on. Or if you are happy with your own company thats great, most people cant stand themselves.
Dont look for a mental disorder to cover up for a lack of confidence be brave, take small steps talk to one person at a time and build a friendship.
Start with a smile one day, then a smile and a hello.
