How come so many people do not raise their hand and speak in class?
Answer:
I think it's a variety of reasons. Some people just don't have the need to talk all the time, while others do (introverts vs. extroverts). I'll bet it's people who measure high on extroversion that dominate classroom "discussions."
Also, other people aren't confident in their answer, and rather than risk making a fool of themselves, will keep silent. There are also people who actually don't read the assigment for the day, but read the assignment after the lecture - you can call them slackers, but some people learn better this way. Some of them are slackers, but some actually do learn better, so it's a fine line.
Other people are raised in cultures where joining in classroom discussions is sort of an alien concept. For example, I come from a culture where you give "answers" but offering an "opinion" is sort of an odd thing. No one cares what I think, so the discussion thing? Weird. When I started college in the US, I thought Americans were feaky weird, with their yap-yap-yapping all the time. Did I contribute to class discussions much for the first year? Not so much. Am I shy? Not really.
I know the reason I usually do not speak up in class is not because im shy (far from it actually) but because I am afraid of having the wrong answer which will make me feel embarassed.so i usually only answer when i know for a fact that I am correct.
I don't know but it annoys me so much. Sometimes, I have an answer I am confident that I know, but I don't get to answer because some jerk calls out. And I've realized that teachers ignore this as students grow older.
Some are shy and scared, and embarassed of answering wrong.
But many like me, simply know the answer, but dont care about raising our hands, and looking like try hards.
Ill raise my hand a couple times if I dont understand and need more clarification, and Ill also answer a couple questions just so it looks like I give a crap and am interested (even though im not).
But i dont over-do it, because then it might look like im teachers pet, or one of those *** try-hards.
Just because I dont raise my hand, doesnt mean we dont know the answers.
I don't think it matters really.
People learn in different methods, so someone who isn't verbally contributing may still digest the information.
