Why do people lose hope? Is it because they think there is no hope left?

Answer:
Well, many factors can account for people losing hope. One, they have not exhaust all possibilities in solving their problems. Two, they really have no idea how they can ever get themselves out of certain situations (e.g. final stage of a terminal illness). Lastly, it could also be due to learnt helplessness.
learned helplessness. when people feel that they no longer have any internal control over their situations, and that no actions they commit can change that, they sink into depression and learned helplessness, and they stop trying..

remember the dog with the shock experiment? look it up, its cool.
People lose hope b'cause there don't happen the things they are wishing to happen for a little while. They get depressed & lose hope.
So many, many reasons. It depends on a person's temperament, mental health and general circumstances. Someone might temporarily lose hope because of a setback or become depressed because of a total lack of optimism for the future.
Being sacked, being unable to find a job, unemployment and a lack of good career options might make someone feel pretty hopeless. They may need to be encouraged to broaden their range of job possibilities or to travel further afield to find a job.
A relationship break-up, divorce, loss of a loved-one might cause a loss of hope.Constant criticism might also have a negative affect on someone. Until eventually they might just give up on their efforts. Encouragement would have the opposite affect.
