Can a sociopath or narcissist recover?
Answer:
Sorry to hear of your situation.
Narcissism and sociopathy can, in theory, and with enormous, and I mean enormous, resources, be overcome, but we're talking years of in-patient hospitalization and then perhaps a 5% shot for sociopathy, and perhaps 50% for narcissism. N is about as intractible as alcoholism, and S is about 50 times more so.
As brutal as it sounds, I would recommend to a friend that you consider someone like that as you would a friend who is mortally wounded. You grieve them, you wish it weren't so, but they're done and you will need to move on. It may be your turn to be mortally wounded one day, but on this day it's them and you're still ok, so manage your life.
Recent studies have suggested that sociopathology is non recoverable. In fact, it actually gets worse over time, as the afflicted learns to manipulate people more sucessfully. If she is a true sociopath, she will never recover. But, sociopathology is not as common in women. It may be something else.
A sociopath no. A sociopath is someone with no conscience. They have no need to "recover" as they see nothing wrong with themselves. A narcissist can be treated.
