Hidden Meanings in the Cat in the Hat?
Okay, I'm sure that psychologists have already delved into this subject, but I'm not really the kind of person that tries to look for hidden meanings in children's books... until today. I was reading The Cat in the Hat to my five year old cousin, and some things about the story leapt out at me that I had never noticed before.
After the story was over and the child to whom I was reading it had gone home, I reread it, this time with a more critical eye.
The mom leaves the kids at home alone and a werido comes into their house (she didn't lock the door - kinda like a couple of parents who were on the news recently - I won't name any names.)
The cat has a striped hat. Perhaps this is symbolic of the striped suits that are commonly worn by prisoners in older movies (the kind that would have been on the air at the time this story was written.) In other words, they were making the cat out to be a real psycho.
Answer:
I think that every children's book has hidden meanings- that's the point- to subtly get messages across to children. You're explanation sounds very logical. I had to take an entire semester of critical analysis for literature last year, and we spent a lot of time analyzing children's books- they do have hidden meanings on purpose.
jeez... what's wrong with you?

Okay but learn notto over think things but I think that there is a hidden meaning in all things but we all think differently so I woud have to say I see your point but the kids don't think this way but don't ruin it for the kids big brother...smile
