I have been told that it is impossible to control someone and that I need control in my life. What does this mean?

You can only control yourself. Control of yourself is control in your life. Trying to control another is futile. Control of yourself is discipline- doing what needs to be done, staying away from the destructive and progressing as a person.
It means, you cannot make someone do what you want them to do and you need to stop trying and work on your own issues.
