Do I have asperger's syndrome?
I stubled upon an article in wikipedia explaining "aspeger's syndrome". I was shocked to see I had some of the traits. I did more reaearch and I really did have some traits. Here are my symptoms:
-I do finger drumming almost all the time, usually the same rythm(i am not a musical person)
-I rock to and fro while sitting(especially when I am thinking hard about something and this used to happen alot when I was in primary school)
-I tend to be uncomfortable when looking into someone's eyes, or I look ONLY at their eyes.
-I like things perfect(for example, if I want to study physics, I feel the need to do maths first for a while so It is in a logical order and I understand it all)
I don't really have that many problems socially and my motor skills are fine.
I feaked out when I realised I had these traits.
ps I also seem to have an obdessive compulsive personality, but not bad because it doesn't interfere with my life at all, just those "perfect" thoughts and mild rituals
Answer:
Ok...I study psych and from what I read in the DSM-IV, I have traits of Social phobia, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Avoidant Personality disorder, Dependent personality disorder, very high OCD.I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's easy to see everything in yourself but there's a key element to most disorders and syndromes in that they need to be affecting your daily functioning (i.e. work, socially etc) in a significant way. All the traits in all disorders will probably be seen in most individuals (except probably things like intellectual disabilities and psychoses) but that doesn't mean these people are mentally ill.
Also, from what you've described, I do those as well except for the eye contact thing! It takes a lot more to diagnose autism spectrum disorders so don't go basing it on what you read on the internet. Trust me, the more you read, the more disorders you will think you have!
Cheers!!
Here's the thing about attempting to self-diagnose. Every one of us can find some aspects of any disorder within ourselves. It doesn't mean that we have that particular disorder. Your best course of action would be to seek a professional evaluation. And if it does turn out that you have Asperger's - it's not a bad thing nor is it a bad thing to have a OCD. So seek out that professional evaluation and go from there.
You may have something else wrong with you, but it doesn't sound like aspergers. Social problems are the major focus with aspergers. Its also common for aspies to be klutzes.
