Is life all about willing yourself to do stuff?
if you don't want to do bad things then don't do bad things.
why do people say they can't help themselves? are they just weak minded and succumb themselves to primal instincts?
Answer:
Mostly people do not know the purpose and meaning of life so they become frustrated and board with life not know the utility of everything. When we understand Bhakti Yoga then we Will be happy, peaceful, and satisfied with what ever is given to us. We then understand our constitutional position as spirit soul embodied to serve. When one puts God (Also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc) in the center of all of their activities they become truly happy. So we have to will ourselves to do stuff as you say in the loving service of God otherwise we will not be fully satisfied. In other words do Gods will. For info on Bhakti Read Bhagavad Gita as it is By Bhaktivedatna Prabhupada- tells how go to asitis.com you can read it on line.
they just don't want to take responsibility= for their own actions .xx
Well, i think its the way we were raised in our enviroment that hugely effects us. Based on John Locke's theory of Tabula Rasa or white slate, when we were young we knew nothing of desires or anything untill we were taught or learned or watched our surrondings and then we learned of it, we started to mimic some things. If you were taught when you were young to not do bad things, you won't likely to do bad things compare to someone living on the streets, having a rough life. Genetics of course can play a part too. As humans, we evolved from single cell organisms to animals such as primates/neathdrals. We do have a animal instinct and we have that in order to survive. As my teacher said, when you're young, you're most animal like because you begin to crawl like a baby and scream when you wanted something. But as you grew up, you learn to be "civlized" and to have manners and learn many other things. It can also be hormones or that drive/adrenaline we humans have that can overcome our logic and senses when making a choice.
