I am starting my degree in Counselling & Pyschology in October.?

Can anyone suggest some good reading to prepare me? Also, options for the different areas I can work e.g addiction counselling etc.

Answer:
Congratulations, that's wonderful.
There are so many different areas to counseling and psychology. That's a good idea about getting required textbooks. Here are some other ideas:

1. On Becoming A Person (Carl Rogers) - standard reading for Person Centered Psychotherapy
2. Love's Executioner (Irvin Yalom) - one of my favorites about a psychiatrist and different case studies regarding therapy
3. Trauma and Recovery (Judith Lewis Herman) - classic in the field regarding trauma and abuse
4. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime (Mark Haddon) - a novel written from the point of view of a high functioning autistic teenage boy
5. Ten Principles for Making Marriage Work (John Gottman) - a good introduction for couples therapy

#2 and #4 are fiction, and they, along with #5, are meant for the general public - but still very good introductions.
#1 and #3 are probably books you will read in your program.
There are zillions of choices, these are just off the top of my head.
Good for you. You should have a bright future. People are beginning to see more and more social problems related to mental issues.
Get a list of your required textbooks and start reading through them asap. You'll feel so much more prepared when you are already familiar with the info. There are all kinds of counseling... community counseling, school counseling, rehabilition/addictions, marriage and family therapy, and the list goes on. Good luck!
