What is meant by perception?

Answer:
In psychology and the cognitive sciences, perception is the process of acquiring, interpreting, selecting, and organizing sensory information. The word perception comes from the Latin perception-, percepio, meaning "receiving, collecting, action of taking possession, apprehension with the mind or senses." Methods of studying perception range from essentially biological or physiological approaches, through psychological approaches through the philosophy of mind and in empiricist epistemology, such as that of David Hume, John Locke, George Berkeley, or as in Merleau Ponty's affirmation of perception as the basis of all science and knowledge.

It is a subjective concept that analyzes a certain matter within the relativity of the given circumstances and the state of the observer's mind.

Hope this helps.
Perception, is the way in which any living thing or even more than one will see/hear/smell/touch something and relate that to the mental framework they have built up to understand it.

For example:

A man with a dark outfit with a shiny metal object on the left side of their chest is standing there. What do you perceive?

A dangerous person? A stranger to be avoided? A police officer to be respected? Someone with authority who is looking for trouble? An alien that is trying to look human?

It's all in how you have learned that this stimulus fits into what you know and what you bellieve...
in plain english...perception is how you see things to be..your other answer before mine is totally correct and an excellent answer..mine is simple and means roughly the same thing
Interesting question that you ask. You are at the computer, typing your question; can you see (perceive) the screen? Can you feel (perceive) your fingers touch the keys? Can you feel (perceive)your behind sitting in your chair with the feeling of your feet touching the floor? This is perception; or at least it is what language calls and defines it as.
There are really very few perceptions, that after they are put into words, actually resemble their linguistic definition, so be wary of definitions, they can be very misleading.
One's personal view. My perception of a person or event will likely differ from yours.
Perception, is essentially the way in which you see things. Let's look at Paris Hilton, for example. Alot of people thisnk she's totally hot. I think she's quite funny looking. Obviously, in this situation, my perception of beauty is different from that of other people. Let's also look at cultural perceptions. Black people tend to like women with large round butts. Wite people tend to think smaller butts make perfect butts. So in that situtation, you can say blacks tend to percieve small, modest butts as flat and unattractive, while whites percieve large, round butts as fat and unsightly. It's all perception. No one's right, no one's wrong, it's just how we view it.
it,s ur way to view things whether u view things positively or negatively. our past behaviour, customes, upbringing, surroundings, conditions and habits play an important role in determining perception.
it is an event through your eyes, your mind, your heart. and everyone's will be different no matter what, because everyone has had a different past and different experiences.
perception is ones own comprehension of the situation. word, symbol etc acoordingtohisown experience whether felt./-heard /- or gained by any other sense person he/.she respects or accepts. that is why except for ----theliteral /dictionary meaning it is different and results in different behavioural response of the same situation, remark ,comment etc. SCS
sensitive,discerning i.e. making out
The way you see it , understand it, look at it, feel about it.
