How did maslow's hierarchy of needs affect human behavior?
Answer:
The Hierachy of Needs doesn't so much affect behaviour as much as it simply gives us a way to describe certain things about it. Like most models of development they stress the fact that humans must grow through certain stages and conditions in order to thrive and it's when these conditions are not met that problems arise. Maslow also believed that basic needs had to be fulfilled in order to keep progressing up through the higher levels. While it seems fairly obvious that a person wouldn't worry much about his aesthetic or knowledge needs if his basic needs such as food and shelter weren't being met, it can be argued that circumstances which influence primary needs can also at the same time influence the later needs such as esteem and self perception.
I don't think that maslow's theory on the hierarchy of needs affected human behavior per se. This theory was formulated based on his study of the human behavior, so it's like he is trying to set a structure in which how human satisfy their needs.
Let us say, on the bottom of the hierarchy, human shall first satisfy his need to survive, when he has achieved such physiological needs, he then seek higher needs and so on and so forth.
So this theory did not in anyway affect human behavior but it was a STUDY of the human behavior as to what needs they have in stages of their existence in society.
Once a theory now a law. Engel's law (economics). People with higher savings from their income spends more on things that are not basic necessities, because they have dispoable income.
This did not affect the human behaviour but it was a study of the human behavior on spending that eventually became a law because each and every human being with income will follow this law. Not by intention but simply because that is human behavior
In my opinion, Maslow's hierachy of needs really did not have any affect on the human behavior. Unlike theories such as conditional learning and instrumental learning, Maslow's hierachy of needs was an observation on how a human being progresses in life.
Maslow's hierachy of needs consists of a couple of stages. The first is stage is the need to fulfill basic needs such as food, water and shelter. Until these needs are not met a human being can not go to the next stage. The next stages are the need for love and achievement. The last stage is the peak where all the needs are fulfilled, very few individuals reach that point.
Maslow's hierachy of needs is seen in our daily lifes. We work so that we have enough money to buy food and shelter. We invest and safe in banks for future security. We care for our loved ones due to the need of love. We receive awards from school and work places due to the need to achieve.
