My career is bringing me down?
Hello everyone, hope everything is good, please help me. I owned a biz for 4 years now and it's been good, but lately I feel like I need to change everything in my life. I drink 3-4 times a week, smoke almost 2 paks of sigaretts daily, and gaining weight fast. I have no desire for nothing, my sex drive is gone too. All I do is work work work, and I need to drink to get me through the day.
I'm very good at what I do, and help hundreds of people, I feel good when I help them, but that's about all like about my biz, the ego boost.
Should i change me, or my career? that's my question. I feel that my biz is doing this to me.
Answer:
What you are feeling is called burnout! ~
You need a long vacation, and to cut down 75% of your smoking. Otherwise you'll ruin your health.
i would say def change your career if it's making you feel this bad. being happy is the first thing you should think about. life is short, so live it well!
Let me get this straight. You are a business owner - good. You help hundreds of people - good. You are good at it and it brings you an ego boost - good. Too much drinking - bad. Smoking - bad. It doesn't sound like a career change is in order here. Your career is the only good thing you've got going right now! Stop smoking and drinking and do something non-destructive you enjoy after work. Maybe you need a healthy outlet like a good hobby. You're too wrapped up in your work. If you get your life straightened out then you can consider a career change if you're still unhappy and you are certain it's your work.
i don't think your career is the problem. You sound like some one who's suddenly realized that his life is empty and all he has is work. So you are working as much as you can because you feel better while at work. You feel like you are contributing something to the world. I would see a therapist to figure out what's going on. But seriously, your work/career is not the problem
To me it sounds like you have put your time, energy, and emotions into your business, but ignored your personal and emotional needs. You are burning out. I am wondering if you have had some big emotional thing happen in your life during this time or prior to starting your business. Sometimes when we have emotional upsets like a divorce or some other betrayal we can try to avoid the hurt by immersing ourselves in our jobs. Then it all catches up with us. So you need to ask yourself why do you always work, work, work? Is it because you perceive that if you don't your business will flounder or is it a way to focus so you don't have to think about your real problem? Drinking is just covering up the real problem, and the drinking certainly points to the fact that you have a problem. I think you need to seek help. Go to AA, get a therapist, pray. Face the hurt and deal with it. If you bury the hurt, it will end up burying you.
If you are enjoying what you do, and you are helping lots of people, than that is fantastic. The only thing that I think maybe you should do is hire some help to alleviate all the time you spend in your business. Especially if you are very good at it. It is not everyday that a person enjoys there job, and thrives on it.
Then the next step, after you hire some help, is that you either quit or cut down on the drinking. Drinking sometimes is alright, just not in excessive--unless you are at a party and everyone is in a great mood, and the booze is flowing great. And I know that it is hard to stop smoking. I quit though cold turkey 12 years ago, and much better for it. I don't even smoke when I have a drink. But you have to want to do this. Start now by cutting back little by little. Instead of smoking, go for gum, bottle of water, etc...
Take a vacation and enjoy life a little. A coupla days away from business will not harm anyone. Good luck--
you need a vacation... something that reminds you of yourself... you seem to like what you do, these changes resemble a depression... take a relaxing vacation. slow down long enough to get your second wind. while away remind yourself of all the reasons you wanted this business... until you're ready to be yourself again... all work and no play is hard on us spiritually emotionaly mentally physically
If u r not here bragging about yourself or your business, then I have to say "it is all up to you". Your way of living your own life; no one can really suffer for you; no one can really help you enjoy yourself either. So take care.
